September’s Spark of Joy

September is my favorite month, not just because it is my birth month, but because it has always felt like a time of new beginnings. This wasn’t always the case; growing up, the thought of starting a new school year filled me with dread. Now that I am older, I fully embrace the season. From chunky sweaters to apple cider donuts. Below are ten ways to bring a spark of joy into your month.

Eat a better breakfast - Enjoy a breakfast full of the season’s fresh bounty. Try this recipe for Savory Pumpkin Bread.

Get a library card - If you don’t already have one, stop by your local public library, sign up for a card, and browse the stacks for a while. See what catches your eye.

Give yourself one kind act of self-care - In the moment, decide to treat yourself to some self-care instead of doing what you’re “supposed” to be doing.

And, while I am thinking about it….

Give yourself some encouragement - If you are anything like me, I’m not always my own advocate. Tell yourself “you are doing a great job,” and believe it because you are.

Take an online class - As the days become shorter and the air turns chilly, September is a great time to grab a hot beverage and learn something new.

Make butterscotch pudding - Butterscotch is my favorite pudding flavor, and it perfectly captures the smell and taste of the season.

Play Checkers - Simple board games are always fun. Revisit this classic.

Smell the crisp fall air - You know what I am talking about. September definitely has a special smell.

Go to a fair - A fall fair is a cornucopia for the senses. Lose yourself in the moment and drink in the atmosphere.

Make cinnamon raisin toast - Oh, how I love cinnamon raisin bread, and making toast is so satisfying. Toast and tea, yes please!
